THE Mayor of Abergavenny has issued a rallying call to local residents to have pride in their town as Abergavenny looks forward to what may be its busiest summer season for a generation.
Let’s have pride in our town!” said Councillor Chris Woodhouse with Abergavenny town centre improvements just weeks away from completion with work due to be unveiled officially in time to host the many thousands of people who will be coming to the National Eisteddfod.
“Before then we also have the Cycling Festival from 15 to 17 July and we would like to have the town looking its best so that people will realise what a great place Abergavenny is.
“The new paving in the town centre is only a part of what will make Abergavenny look good – a lot more will be gained from litter-free, weed-free and dog-mess free streets, clean public toilets and attractive streets,” said Councillor Woodhouse.
He went on to say “The Town Council is doing its part by providing most of the flower displays, flags and bunting and is providing 100,000 new town maps and guides to attract people into the town centre during the festival period. But, we can all do our bit to make the town look good, not just for visitors but for our own benefit as well.”
The town council is trying to encourage residents and traders to look after the areas where they live – picking up litter in the streets near their houses and clearing weeds in the street outside their homes if necessary in a bid to improve civic pride. Anyone who can is invited to help to tidy up public areas, and just as importantly, to keep them looking good by not creating litter in the first place.
“ Come on Abergavenny – let`s see how well we can do – we enjoy living here so let`s make it as good as it can be” urged Councillor Woodhouse.
