HRH Prince Charles attended a memorial church service today in Abergavenny, in dedication to the town’s former vicar.

The Prince of Wales arrived amongst a throng of locals awaiting his appearance at St Mary’s Church, to partake in the dedication of the church’s Jesse Window, built in memoriam of the late Dean Jeremy Winston.

The Very Revd Jeremy Winston served as Vicar of Abergavenny for 18 years, until September 2011, before becoming Dean of the Diocese of Monmouth. He passed away two months later, aged 57.

The late Dean was credited with driving forward the transformation of St Mary’s Priory Church into what some describe as the ’Westminster Abbey of Wales’, a project closely supported by HRH The Prince of Wales.

His Royal Highness attended the dedication of the Jesse Window as part of his commitment to St Mary’s as a patron.

The Prince of Wales has been Patron of the Trust since its beginning, and His Royal Highness has most recently taken a keen and key interest in the design of the Jesse Window, which depicts Christ as God, and as man, in its central theme.

The Jesse Window, which displays the growth of the Jesse tree, or vine, demonstrates Christ’s journey as the Messiah.

The window was been designed by Helen Whittaker, a graduate and now visiting lecturer at The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, and was dedicated today as the Lewis Chapel evolves into a more accessible place of worship.

The renovations include further facilities for learning and community use in conjunction with those in the Tithe Barn.
