Goytre - 3
Pontypridd Town - 1
GOYTRE cruised to the top of Welsh League Division Three on Saturday after taking Pontypridd Town to the cleaners and becoming the only team in their division to make it two wins out of two.
Making a solid start, Goytre were rewarded for their efforts early on when Matthew Prosser rounded the keeper and fired home to give Plough Road the upper hand.
20 minutes later Goytre were awarded a penalty and wasted no time in capitalising through the boot of Dale Clarke to make it 2-0 going into the interval.
Come the second half and five minutes in Lewis Clare put the game beyond Ponty's reach to make it 3-1 to Goytre.
Ponty scored their first with 15 minutes on the clock, but it was too little to late for the visitors as the last clear cut chance of the game fell to Goytre's Chris Pritchard, whose penalty was just denied by the crossbar.
Club chairman David Melmoth told the Chronicle, "It's still very early days, so we're not about to get carried away with the fact that we're currently sitting on top of the table. The team are playing well and although we've picked up a few injuries, we've got a strong squad and are looking forward to the big challenge of playing Division One's Caerau Ely in a Welsh Cup tie this Saturday at Plough Rd."
Kick-off is at 2.30pm.
Govilon - 0
Liswerry - 1
FOLLOWING on from their 2-4 league victory over local rivals Clydach Wasps in midweek,
Govilon crashed out of the Gwent County Motors Challenge Cup on Saturday losing
1-0 to Newport side Liswerry.
The Badgers failed to find the fast flowing football that they are accustomed to play which has seen them win their first three league games of the season.
The only goal of the game came 15 minutes in when a poor defensive header fell to Liswerry's Dean Merret, whose 10 yard volley flew into the roof of the net.
Leon Gilchrist nearly levelled the scores on the 26 minute mark but his header was saved by Ross Davies in the Liswerry goal.
Four minutes later, Govilon's best chance of the game fell to Dean Morgan who was set free down the right after some good link up play from the Govilon midfield, but Morgan failed to take his chance.
The second half saw Manager Steven Morgan change the formation as he introduced Laurent and Casa to try and break down the Liswerry defence, but it was Liswerry who should have extended their lead on the hour when they beat the Govilon off side trap only to see a great chance wasted.
Govilon continued to become frustrated and a goal mouth scramble after 83 minutes nearly bought Govilon back on level terms only for the woodwork to come to Liswerry's rescue.
It was not to be Govilon's day and referee Campbell bought proceedings to a finish with Liswerry progressing to the second round.
RTB Ebbw Vale - 7
Blaenavon Blues - 0
BLAENAVON Blues were also spectacularly kicked out of the County Motors challenge cup on Saturday afternoon after suffering a humiliating 7-0 defeat at the hands of RTB Ebbw Vale. This absolute mauling was something of a shock for the Blues as it came on the back of two excellent league victories against Lliswerry and Pontymister.
The Blues went into the game missing a few key players including first team captain Lee Wathen, and after five minutes lost left back Craig Tanner to a foot injury quickly followed by vice captain Darren Harris who limped off with a hamstring strain.
The Blues never recovered from the reshuffle and RTB Ebbw Vale were deserved winners.
The first half was a fairly tight affair and RTB went in at half time only 1-0 up.
The second half was completely dominated by RTB as the Blues struggled to find any shape and composure, and RTB took full advantage of the Blues uncertainty and scored six second half goals.
The Blues will need to get their act together for the visit of local rivals Clydach Wasps this Friday evening for a floodlit match on Blaenavon RFC's Recreation ground. Kick off 7pm.
