An Abergavenny anti-Brexit crusader is launching a new political party to ‘offer a home’ to swathes of voters he says are ‘left behind’.

Political activist and geologist, Chris Formaggia’s new party promises to reverse ‘any form’ of Brexit, and campaign for the UK to re-enter the European Union at ‘the earliest possibility’.

Mr Formaggia last year formed part of a successful bid to block the triggering of Article 50 – the legal process to leave the EU – after raising half a million pounds, forcing the government into the High Court and stopping Article 50 being pushed without a vote in parliament.

Organisers are now crowd-funding £150,000 to sprout the new centrist party, with 200 people busy drafting a manifesto, constitution, financial and membership scheme ahead of registering with the Electoral Commission.

Mr Formaggia said last week with both Labour and the Conservatives locked in battles for their ideological souls, many moderate voters feel ‘politically homeless’. "The party offers a new political home to moderates of all persuasions,” he said.

“The start of Brexit negotiations has clearly focused attention on the immense value – social, commercial, educational, cultural and scientific – that we receive from membership of the EU.

"An increasing number of people are recognising this and how much we gain as a nation, our aim is to give them a voice.”

According to Mr Formaggia, the new party will ‘leave behind entrenched ideological positions’ and campaign to change the voting system to Proportional Representation.
