Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay has said he was disappointed to learn that proposals for de-trunking the A40 through Abergavenny have been dropped.
Mr Ramsay, who has been pressing the Welsh Government for an update on the issue, has received a letter from the Welsh Government secretary for transport, Ken Skates AM, stating that the project had been shelved due to funding issues.
Proposals could be revisited in future years, the statement added.
Commenting on the decision, Mr Ramsay said, “This announcement will come as a disappointment to many local people who are fed up and frustrated by the high volumes of heavy goods traffic through the town.
“Hopefully, the Welsh Government can look at other options for improving traffic flows through Abergavenny.”
Plans to de-trunk the A40 through the town have been debated since the late 1990s with support from Mr Ramsay and Monmouth MP?David Davies.
Abergavenny Town Council gave its voice to the debate back in 2012 when it called for the road to be de-trunked and heavy traffic to be diverted over the bridge at Llanfoist as part of a bid to prevent lorries driving through the centre of Abergavenny.
