DOG owners in Abergavenny have been warned to be vigilant for any possible symptoms of Parvovirus in their pets after Abbey Vets treated a confirmed case earlier this week.

In a “Parvovirus Awareness” post, the Abergavenny veterinary practice explained, “We had a lovely dog brought in today with parvovirus.

“The owner has stated that they only walk around Castle Meadows in Abergavenny.”

Abbey Vets stressed, however, “that this does not mean it will only be in this specific area.”

The practice is urging dog owners to keep a vigilant eye out for signs of parvovirus in their pooches and ensure they are up to date with vaccinations.

Parvovirus is a dangerous and highly contagious virus that puppies and dogs with weakened immune systems are particularly prone to.

Commonly known as “Parvo” the virus attacks a dog’s immune system and is highly damaging to their gut lining.

It can be life-threatening if treatment is not given quickly and so it’s essential to contact the vets immedietly if your dog has a suspected case.

Abbey Vets have stressed that if owners see signs of severe diarrhoea, vomiting, severe low energy, a very high or low temperature, pale gut, abdominal pain or reduced appetite in their dogs, to contact the practice.
