Double Olympic medal winner Becky James unveiled a community information screen in her home town of Abergavenny last week, accompanied by the Chairman of Monmouthshire County Council, Councillor Jim Higginson and the Mayor of Abergavenny, Councillor Chris Woodhouse.
It’s believed to be the first time a local authority in Wales has used such a medium.
The aim is improve the ability of MCC to communicate directly with communities and provide county-wide and local news.
“It’s an absolute pleasure to launch this screen which will be a great asset for the local community,” said Becky. “I’m delighted that my home town Abergavenny is the location for such a useful source of information as there is so much going on in the area that deserves to be heard far and wide!”
County Councillor Geoff Burrows, the council’s cabinet member for social care, safeguarding and health said, “Digital information boards are widely used in countries like France and are a very effective way of getting messages across. This provision will benefit people who tend to lack access to traditional methods of communication and it will assist in providing help to receive local services.”
Councillor Higginson added, “This is a very good initiative and it demonstrates the council is moving ahead with the times. I’m looking forward to the establishment of this form of media in the county’s other towns.”
Two more information boards are planned for Abergavenny at a later stage and it is hoped to introduce similar facilities in other Monmouthshire towns. Information will not be limited to council events, advice and news – local organisations, other public services and businesses will also enjoy access.
