Whiteheads FC - 1

Abergavenny Thursdays - 2

IN their best performance of the season to date, he Green Army beat a very good Whiteheads team in Newport courtesy of goals from Daynor Thorpe and Jamie 'Totty' Laurent.

Some slick football by the Thursdays should have seen them go two or three up early on but they eventually turned their play into points after Daynor Thorpe capitalised on a defensive lapse by the home side.

The Thursdays created several good chances to consolidate their lead before half time but were unable to deliver the telling blow and the 1-0 score-line remained.

The Thursdays second goal finally arrived in the shape of 25 yard screamer of a free kick from Jamie Laurent.

Disaster struck when the Thursdays keeper Lee Jones responded to some carefully baited provocation and charged after the Whiteheads centre forward.

Although no blows were exchanged, the customary ram stance of locking horns left the referee with no choice other than to issue a red card to the Thursdays keeper.

Daz Harris put on the keeper's gloves and it was all hands to the pumps to ensure Aber

defended their three points.

Sterling defensive work by Joe Pengelly and Dave Brown meant Harris was never really tested in the last 20 minutes of the game and they run out deserved winners.

The team spirit and pattern of play is now starting to emerge in the ranks of the Thursdays and hopefully the added ingredient of consistency will enable a climb up the Gwent County Division Three table.
