Inspired by the demolition of Newport’s much-loved Chartist Mural, Smash It Up was developed on the streets, public spaces and building sites of the city.
Performance artists Mr and Mrs Clark bring this extraordinary show - which combines theatre, film, music, an exhibition, some dance and a lot of wit - to Abergavenny Borough Theatre tomorrow (Friday April 1).
The show was short-listed for the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award 2015 and although the performance is about a local issue it explores the wider context of creation, destruction and the role of art and culture in our lives.
Theatre Manager Nick Banwell saw the show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last summer and was keen to present it to Abergavenny audiences.
“Smash It Up is about serious stuff, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It retains its sense of humour. I found it moving and inspiring,” he said.
“As Amnesty International said about its shortlisted shows - ‘Great human rights theatre should move us, inform us and even disturb us’. Certainly, I was glad that I went to see it.”
Tickets, which cost £13 (concessions £11 / student £6) are available from the Box Office on 01873 850805 or online at boroughtheatreabergavenny.co.uk
