Members of Usk and District Young Farmers’ Club have voted in a new ‘top table’ for the coming year.

At the recent AGM out-going chairman Owain Williams and secretary Helen Hinton were thanked for their hard work and congratulated on their successes, including the well-attended Wurzels concert on Usk Showground this summer.

The new chairman, Laura Baker, has been a member of the club for 14 years, joining at the age of 10.

She said she was ‘proud and honoured’ to take on her new role.

“I cannot be more thankful for the many opportunities I have had through the club, from travelling to Kenya to performing on the Millennium Centre stage in Cardiff,” she said. “I have gained so much confidence from entering public speaking competitions and performing on stage.

“The club really has helped me gain life skills that have helped towards my academic and career successes while making friends for life and having lots of fun on the way!

“I am now excited for the year ahead, with plans for a bonfire night, Halloween scarefest, theme park trip and our annual Christmas dinner and dance.”

In addition to Laura, Usk YFC’s 2015/16 committee is made up of: Secretary, Laura Morgan; Vice-chairman, Dan Siggers; Treasurer, Charlie Bowyer; Social secretary, Rebekah Wills; Minutes secretary, Francesca Williams; Press and IT Officer, Laura Bowyer and President, Peter Williams.

Usk YFC is one of six clubs within the Gwent Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs, which is affiliated to Wales YFC. It is the third oldest YFC in the country.

The club meets every Wednesday evening, often in or around Usk.

To kick the year off, the club will be holding a new members’ fun and games night on Wednesday October 21 (from 7.30pm) at Coleg Gwent Usk Campus.

If you’re interested in becoming a Young Farmer and are aged between 10 and 26, it’s a good chance to see what Usk YFC is all about.

“It really doesn’t matter if you haven’t got a farming background – as long as you’ve got a pair of wellies and want to get stuck in!” said Laura.
