The new £5 million livestock market in Bryngwyn, near Raglan was officially opened last week, with more than 2,000 people flocking to the celebrations.

The Monmouth Livestock Centre replaces the current market at Abergavenny, which is due to hold its final market on December 11.

The 27-acre site hosts a huge main building, with offices, a ring, 396 pens, a cafe and parking for over 150.

Leader of Monmouthshire County Council, Peter Fox said, "Today starts a new chapter for agriculture. Farming has to be sexy, exciting and progressive and that's exactly what this market is about."

The event was opened by born and bred farmer, and BBC Countryfile presenter, Adam Henson (pictured), who expressed his delight to see such a huge investment into the farming community.

"It's great to see so many people come to the market opening today, and I hope it is as busy when the auctions are on. This is a wonderful change for the future of the farming industry," he said.

"There are always mouths that need feeding, and there is a fantastic business mind towards farming to take agriculture to the next level. There are so many areas of farming, so anyone with an interest in any career field, such as marketing, engineering or even just a love of food, can get involved in this movement for the future."

Adam also had the proud job of handing the keys to the market's head auctioneer, Keith Spencer of Newland Rennie Wilkins.

Mr Spencer said, "We are all sad to see the end of Abergavenny Market, but this is a move towards the future.
