Black Mountain Jazz stages its first club night at Abergavenny’s Melville Centre in Pen-y-Pound at the end of this month, when it hosts the Celtic folk/jazz pioneers ‘Carmina’.
The move to the new venue comes after nearly two years at the Kings Arms, where the support of Sacha and Jon was very much appreciated.
The use of the Melville Centre will provide BMJ with more capacity and the benefit of a well-equipped theatre, the perfect size for club nights. Arrangements are also being made to use the centre for the ticketed part of the wall2wall Jazz Festival, which takes place over the four days from September 1 to 4.
Carmina have released five albums to date, two of which were produced by Irish music legend Dónal Lunny. They have toured worldwide, appearing at festivals such as Glastonbury, Edinburgh Fringe, Madrid Jazz, Cork Jazz and Marlborough Jazz.
Their music is an intoxicating blend of Celtic-inspired themes and jazz improvisation, woven together in powerful original songs. Carmina are now planning their next album ‘Landmarks’, to be recorded early this year.
Carmina will be at Black Mountain Jazz on Sunday (January 31). The bar opens at 7pm and the music starts at 8pm. All are welcome.
Tickets at £10 (£8 for Friends of BMJ) can be bought on the ‘Club Programme’ page of the BMJ website at blackmountainjazz.co.uk or on the door. It is best to reserve them by calling 07958 612691.
