A BLAENAVON garden in need of some green fingered TLC received a makeover from celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin after winning a TV competition.

Blaenavon Senior Citizens Hall secretary Barbara Lewis entered a 'Garden Angels' competition on ITV's This Morning in the hope of their garden being chosen.

Mrs Lewis said, "The garden had not been used been used for 30 years so I entered the competition and told them all about us."

She told them how many members of Blaenavon Senior Citizens live in sheltered accommodation and don't have gardens.

A few weeks later Mrs Lewis were told they had been shortlisted and a site visit was needed.

To their surprise Diarmuid Gavin turned up and told them they had been chosen.

Mrs Lewis said, "The makeover took three weeks and we are really happy with it. Not only have the members got a garden to use but Busy Bees nursery next door have areas in the garden they can use too."

Diarmuid designed a peaceful space, with a lawn and plenty of places to sit, with a frame of wooden poles, ropes and roses and finished off with a fountain.

The garden was officially opened by Torfaen mayor Councillor Tom last month.
