The Chronicle is grateful to reader, John Lewis for sharing this photograph from 97 years ago showing crowds gathering at the unveiling ceremony of the Mons Monument at the bottom of Frogmore Street.

The unveiling was conducted by Major General Lord Treowen on October 29th, 1921.

The statue, by sculptor, Gilbert Ledward was paid for by public subscription. Present at the ceremony was Mayor of Abergavenny, Councillor John Rutland-Beckwith.
