SOUTH East Wales running champion, Abigail Fisher, plans to spend her eleventh birthday on November 11 in an unusual way – walking, cycling and riding over 30 miles in a single day to raise money for children whose lives are torn apart by war.
Abi, the fastest girl of her age over 800 metres in South East Wales, realised that she will be 11 on this November's Remembrance Day (11/11/11), so she is using her special day doing something special for children caught up in violent conflicts.
"I am going to walk 11 miles, then cycle 11 miles and then do 11 miles horse-riding," explained Abi, who has just started Year Six and is very aware of how war damages many children.
"It must be so frightening, being scared that bombs are going to drop or maybe even that you have to fight in a war. Children find themselves without much to eat, their homes get destroyed, they are separated from their mums and dads, and the noise of war must be terrible," added the Crickhowell youngster who has set herself a target of £1,111.11 to raise for the charity War Child, but rapidly doubled it to £2222.22.
So far Abi has raised over £1400. But she knows it's not going to be easy.
"The walking is going to be hardest. We did a trial on holiday in Cornwall. It was really tiring but good fun. I reckon it will take about four hours to do the walk, and two hours to cycle 11 miles and then about two and half hours for the horse riding. That means starting in the dark. I hope it does not rain or snow," said Abi.
Fortunately, Abigail will have plenty of support – her mum is joining her for the walk; her dad will cycle alongside Abi, and her sister, Miriam, 15, will ride with her.
Best of all, Abi will have the day off school to make her fundraising journey.
