After many months of planning and fund-raising and with a £3,000 grant from the
Welsh National Lottery, members of the Bettws Phone Box Project are delighted to announce that the Wonky Box of Bettws has been saved!
In addition to housing a defibrillator, the team intends making the box a local
community information point – and also one of the smallest lending libraries in Wales.
The project is now fully funded for the first phase of its transformation from eyesore to life-saver.
The phone box has been adopted on behalf of the group by the Heartbeat Trust
charity, who are advising on the installation of the defibrillator equipment and training for its use.
In the meantime, the team expects to start work on the refurbishment as soon as BT
have removed the redundant phone and some workdays have already been scheduled.
There is a lot of work to be done removing decades’ worth of paint, repairing the door
and making the box watertight, but there is masses of enthusiasm for the job and it is hoped to have the new kiosk in operation by this autumn.
If you would like to volunteer your skills or services, or make a donation to the
upkeep (as there will be running costs over the coming years that are not funded yet)
