Look what set up home at Raglan Castle this summer!

NOW that summer is fading like someone else’s dream, it’s nice to remember what once was before the black hole of the winter months swallows us whole.

And as this delightful little photo proves, one of the many things that happened in the heat and the haze was finding an unexpected bird nest in the most peculiar of places.

That place being the steps leading up to the tower of Raglan Castle.

The shot was snapped by amateur lensman Gabriel Archan who spent a lot of June and July summering in the stone and shadow of Raglan Castle.

The keen-eyed photography enthusiast took a host of pics of the castle from every conceivable angle, but perhaps the money shot was this one of a couple of baby pigeons.

What’s unusual is, they weren’t nesting in the castle’s eaves, parapets or high and lonely crevices or holes, but on the steps leading to the top of the tower.

Gabe told the Chronicle, “I had the shock of my life when I nearly stepped on some sort of hot mess on the castle tower’s steps, only to find it was a couple of chicks sitting in their own crap!

“On closer inspection, I saw it was a pair of pigeons. Apparently pigeons are notoriously awful at making nests, and it must of fallen from some place high up, and they were probably just making do. Still, it must have been a bit unnerving for them to see all these big feet constantly passing by.”

Gabe added, “It was pointed out to me later that there was a sign at the bottom of the tower saying ‘Caution. Pigeon nesting up the staircase.’ But I’ve got ADHD and so I ignored it.

“I suppose in the old days they would have ended up in a pigeon pie for the resident nobs, but we’re more civilised nowadays, and instead of slaughtering innocent and defenceless creatures we just take pictures of them instead!”
