AS always, the final duty of Abergavenny’s outgoing mayor is to present the annual Abergavenny Chronicle community awards which recognise the ‘unsung heroes’ of the town.

The winners are decided on by a panel made up of the Editor of the Abergavenny Chronicle, the Mayor and the town clerk and drawn from nominations made by local people.

“We had some excellent nominations this year and have presented three awards,” said Councillor David Simcock.

“One of the winners was delighted to accept the award but has asked to remain anonymous,” he added.

First award of the evening went to Sue Jones, the driving force behind local group Crafty Women.

“The group encourages people to re-use and up cycle materials for craft purposes as well as providing a vital support network to this who attend.

“It became a charity in 2015 and since then Sue has been actively involved in raising funds and awareness to keep it going. She is involved in a number of other community projects but is possibly best known as the person who brought the BBC’s Street Auction to Abergavenny,” he said.

The second award of the night went to Alison White who heads the Abergavenny Run With Us group, which encourages people to improve their fitness by following a ‘couch to 5k’ programme.

In addition to her work with the group Alison has personally raised more than £20,000 for the Velindre Trust.
