As the predicted ‘beast from the east’ bites and the cold snap sinks temperatures to below freezing across the area, Abergavenny residents are giving a thought to the homeless with plans for a community effort to set up a soup kitchen to cater for local homeless people and those struggling with other issues.

Sammie Jayne Morgan, who came up with the idea, said she hoped to work with the local community and businesses to get the idea off the ground.

“This is hopefully going to be set up for the homeless and less fortunate in Abergavenny town, said Miss Morgan.

“We hope to provide somewhere where the people who need it can feel like they can have a hot meal in the cold weather, but at nights. It’s become so cold. We hope to work with local businesses and the community to build this up as much as we can to be successful.

I’m very grateful in all comments and support we’ve received so far in the beginning of this venture via social media.”

Christopher Vaz, Pastor at Gateway Church Abergavenny, said in a post on local site Abergavenny Voice that his church is ready and able to help those who fall through the safety net.

“As the temperature drops, a warm welcome awaits all at Gateway Church Abergavenny.

We can help with shower facilities, laundry facilities, clothing, a warm cuppa and food.”

The Gateway Christian Centre is located on Monk Street, Abergavenny.
