A local councillor has pushed the county council to help local businesses benefit from the numbers visiting Abergavenny’s newly opened Morrisons supermarket.

Tudor Thomas, Labour councillor for Priory Ward, said long contested issues with the store must now take a ‘pragmatic approach’, before calling on Monmouthshire County Council to help encourage footfall from the new store to spread across to Abergavenny’s independent businesses.

“I want decent signage made to direct people visiting Morrisons and on to the high street, and especially Abergavenny’s historic market,” he said.

“There are many worried stallholders in the market, who are understandably anxious about any impact Morrisons could have on their business.”

Councillor Thomas has written to MCC, requesting for plans to be drawn up which could see signs erected around the town encouraging visitors and locals to venture to the high street.

“Abergavenny’s market is historic, and crucially important to the town, and the people who work there. The county council has a duty of care to ensure the impact is measured. ??“There are more than enough people in the town to see both Morrisons and the market thrive. The market really is the jewel in the crown.”
