The Bryn village hall near Abergavenny has taken delivery of a litter picking kit, funded by Llanover Community Council.

The community lies close to the River Usk and litter of all sorts is frequently washed down the river, onto its banks and even into the neighbouring fields.

The idea for a community litter picking kit came from two village residents Loulou Gough and Dolly Hammick.

The girls had noticed litter whilst out walking along the river with their parents and were enthusiastic about trying to do something about it.

Both are active supporters of the eco-committees at their schools and are very aware of dangers to the planet, and of the need for all of us to look after our local environments.

‘‘The litter can trap and be a danger to animals,’ said Dolly, who had noticed that most of the fields bordering the river banks contain livestock.

Lou-Lou commented that ‘‘We all have to try hard to save the planet, and that includes recycling everything we can.’’.

The girls hope that others in the village will also take the litter pickers out on their walks and help to keep the village and countryside clean.

Alison Denton, a Community Councillor for The Bryn said: ‘‘We are very grateful to Llanover Community Council for funding this kit for the community to use, and to Monmouthshire County Council for donating gloves and disposing of the rubbish collected.

‘‘We look forward to more children in the village being inspired to become involved, and helping us all to feel proud of our neighbourhood.’’
