FOALS, the Friends of Abergavenny Library organisation, has announced the winners of its recent short story writing competition. The winners were presented with their prizes at Abergavenny Library just before Christmas.

The competition required youngsters to tell a story up to 500 words and was open to two age groups: 7 to 11 and 12 to 15.  The subject was entirely their choice but entries were judged on originality, plot, characterisation, language and enjoyment.

The lower age group winner was Henry Maxwell (8) and the runner-up was Rebecca Taylor aged 11.  The winner in the 12-15 age group was Harriet Haylock aged 14 with Lucas Burford (15) taking second prize.  Winners received a £50 prize while runners-up took home £25.

Chairman of FOALS, Mr George Beale said: “We hope to make this an annual event in order to promote literacy among young children.  I was very impressed by the standard of the entries and choosing the winners and runners-up was by no means an easy task.”
