Residents in Powys are being reminded that refuse that is not contained within the wheeled bin will not be collected.

A temporary measure was put in place due to the collection arrangements over Christmas and the New Year which resulted in some residents having to wait an extra week for their refuse and recycling collection and also the extra waste generated during this period.

Councillor John Powell, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability said: “Now that the festive period is over, any refuse that is not contained within a wheeled bin will not be collected. Wheeled bin lids must be fully closed and any additional waste that is not placed out for collection in Powys purple refuse sacks will be left. Householders will be written to informing them of the reason for this being left and that repeat incidents could ultimately lead to a fixed penalty notice.

“The council faces strict statutory recycling targets set by Welsh Government which will result in heavy fines if not met. There is still too much refuse being sent to landfill and we urge residents to ensure that they recycle as much of their waste as possible.”

The council provides a weekly kerbside recycling collection for plastic and cans, paper and card, glass and food waste. Residents are reminded that we are no longer able to collect plastic bags and plastic film (stretchy plastic items such as carrier bags, magazine wrappers, bags and bubble wrap) for recycling at the kerbside or at recycling centres as this is very difficult and costly to recycle.

However, clean plastic bottles and tops, pots, tubs and food trays, food and drink cans, aluminium foil, metal bottle tops and jar lids and aerosol cans can still be recycled in your red plastic and cans box

“If you need any help and advice with reducing your refuse and increasing your recycling, please contact us on 0845 602 7035 or email [email protected]”, he added.
