FIRE crews were called out to rescue a horse that took a ‘water jump’ and got stuck in an outdoor swimming pool.

Cheeky the horse took a dip at a house in Llanover near Abergavenny and rescuers had to empty the pool before building a makeshift escape ramp.

A post from South Wales Fire and Rescue said: “Crews from Abergavenny and Merthyr were called to rescue a horse, called Cheeky, stuck in a swimming pool.

“Firefighters drained the pool and used timber and hay bales to make an escape platform. It was neigh bother to rescue Cheeky, who was unharmed after the unscheduled dip.”

A spokeswoman added: “At approximately 10.58am on Sunday, March 20, 2022, we received reports of an animal rescue on Llanvair Grange Road in Llanover.

“Crews from Abergavenny and Merthyr Tydfil Stations attended the scene where a horse was stuck in an outdoor swimming pool.

“Firefighters drained the swimming pool and utilised bays of hay and timber to rescue the horse from the pool.

“A stop message was received at approximately 12.19pm.”

SWFR posted a film of the rescue on its Twitter feed, and jokers responded with one saying: “Practicing the water jump for the Grand National.”

Another added: “As long as the horse is safe, that’s the mane thing”.

And one posted: “Horse was interviewed after the event and asked “why the long face” - I’ll be here all week.”
