An Abergavenny dog-walker strolling by the River Usk was horrified to discover dumped broken glass causing danger to nearby grazing animals, leading to a heartfelt plea for people to take their litter home and dispose of their rubbish safely.

Councillor Teslin Davies, the town’s deputy mayor, spotted the fly-tipped rubbish by the riverside at Llanwenarth on what she thought would be a pleasant walk with her dog. "I was dismayed there were broken bottles, cans, plastic bags in a field containing sheep and horses. It was horrendous. Whoever had left it had no thought about the dangers to the animals and wildlife," said Teslin, a member of Keep Abergavenny Tidy (KAT), the volunteer litter-picking group. "It actually made me feel like crying." She collected up the hazardous rubbish so that it could be disposed of safely. "Heavy rain and storms were forecast," she said. "The thought of what would have happened to it otherwise if we had had a flood. People should take their rubbish home." The incident took place on the same day that KAT held their monthly community litter pick. "I think it shows how much is done to clear such unnecessary eyesores," said KAT coordinator Helen Trevor Davies. If like Teslin, you want to clear up a favourite spot, litter picking kit can be loaned from the Abergavenny Community Centre, the former Park Street school.
