HEAVY goods vehicle operators are being warned that the Abergavenny area is being targeted by thieves stealing goods and diesel from lorries parked overnight on the fringes of town. Local police have described the operation as very daring as pallet loads of goods are disappearing and diesel is being siphoned off whilst the driver sleeps in the cab.
In the latest spate a driver woke up on October 31 to find that over £500 of fuel had been siphoned off. Three pallets, valued at £3,000, were removed from a B&M lorry parked up on the outskirts of town on October 24 whilst the driver was sleeping.
Sergeant Tony Patey said that this style of theft was becoming a major problem and added: "The thieves are very cunning and daring as it takes a lot of effort which includes the use of fork lifts trucks to remove the pallets from the lorries. If anybody sees a van parked nearby a parked lorry and suspicious activity going on we would appreciate a call.
"We would far rather a wasted visit to an innocent situation than not being told about it." Contact the police on 101.
