A local hospital is committed to employing local people, as a huge recruitment drive aims to bring more nurses to Wales.

Introducing the Train, Work, Live campaign, health secretary Vaughan Gethin announced bursaries for student nurses, midwives and health professionals will be available next year.

Individuals applying for the assistance will have to commit to work in Wales, for at least two years after graduating.

The international campaign will target newly qualified and experienced registered nurses, as well as those who may be considering returning to the profession.

Mr Gething said the campaign would help attract more into the profession. “We value the professional judgement of nurses and we want to get that message out to attract more nurses to come experience what we have to offer.”

A spokesman for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, which runs local Nevill Hall Hospital said the scheme was keen to find local applicants.

“We have an active recruitment programme in place to fill Registered Nursing vacancies. Those are being advertised continually on NHS Jobs with monthly interview opportunities and appointments made.

“The University Health Board maintains a strong commitment to recruit locally offering opportunities for student nurses from local universities. Recruitment events are also held throughout the year, which have proved very successful at attracting locally-trained student nurses.”
