The Friends of Cwmdu Music will welcome the resurrected Gwent Chamber Orchestra to St Michael and All Angels Church, Cwmdu on October 10 (7.30pm).

From 2005 to 2012 Gwent Chamber Orchestra gave eight highly successful performances at St Michael’s but that run was brought to an end with the sad death of their leader, John Roberts and also by the illness of their conductor David Gedge.

Earlier this year, however, a group of former members of ’the Gwent’, joined by others who have moved into the area more recently, had a trial get-together to see if resurrecting this very popular orchestra was feasible. They were delighted with enthusiasm for the project.

The concert, including works by Grieg, Mozart and Telemann, will be given under their new conductor Stephen Broom (former principal viola of the Orchestra of The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden) and leader Julia Watkins (a freelance violinist, who has worked with many of the national orchestras).

Nick Gedge will also be joining them as the bass soloist in arias from Handel’s ’Messiah’.

Tickets at £12 each are available from Abergavenny Music, Ardent Gallery in Brecon, Crickhowell Resource and Information Centre, Haymakers Gallery in Hay-on-Wye and on the door.
