An Abergavenny construction specialist is proving that 'Business is Good for Britain' through its numerous 'green' achievements.

Anthony A. Davies beat off challengers from across Wales to win the Sustainability Award at the Welsh heats of the British Chambers of Commerce Awards 2012, impressing judges with its commitment to making environmental best practice a key part of its growth plans.

The company, which offers building, restoration and refurbishment services, has received plaudits for introducing two new eco-friendly joinery ranges - Coed Derwen and Accoya. The latter is a softwood treated with a vinegar that guarantees timber for 50 years, thus halving the number of trees harvested.

Employing 40 people, Anthony A Davies has also invested in new technologies such as rainwater harvesting systems, solar panelling and geothermal heating.

Managing Director Anthony Davies said, "We're really pleased to have won this award. We were recognised at the Abergavenny Business awards last year and were put through to the South Wales Chamber awards which we won at the end of last year.

"To now win the Welsh region and to be put forward to the National awards is a great achievement.

"We work in an industry which can have a great detrimental effect on the environment. This award recognises all the hard work all our employees, suppliers and sub-contractors put in to ensure that we do not have an adverse effect on the environment and look at ways in which we can be proactive in protecting it."

President of the British Chambers of Commerce Martyn Pellew said: "There has never been a more important time for businesses to showcase the amazing work they are doing on a day-to-day basis.

"The Chamber Awards is a perfect platform for them to do just that and receive the recognition and profile they deserve for helping move the economy forward and create employment, often in local areas."

Now in its ninth year, the competition is one of the showcase events for the 'Business is Good for Britain' campaign that highlights the role of business as a positive force for the UK recovery and the success of local communities and individuals.

Anthony A Davies, a member of the South Wales Chamber of Commerce, is one of six regional winners in Wales who will now go forward and compete for the national titles in their respective categories. All will have a chance to win 'Outstanding Business Achievement' and a £25,000 cash prize, courtesy of the RBS Group, at the national final at London's Guildhall on November 29.

* The company has also reached the Welsh regional finals of the National Training Awards in relation to succession training within the company. The awards ceremony takes place on Monday, October 15 in Llandudno.
