Monmouth Town - 1
Goytre - 2
GOYTRE extended their unbeaten run away from home and kicked off the new year in fine style on Saturday with an away victory over fellow Welsh League Division Three outfit Monmouth Town.
Monmouth, who were themselves unbeaten in three games, contested the game on a bone hard pitch which had frozen overnight.
Such conditions made it difficult for both sides to put any passing play together, and subsequently the long ball approach became the order of the day.
Goytre created one of a few chances in the opening 25 minutes when a long ball from defender Dean Taylor found striker Graham Mason on the edge of the penalty area, and although his delicate lob come shot sailed over the keeper, it also just inched over the bar.
Monmouth striker Phil Tranter should have put his side in front when he raced clear from halfway, and with Goytre appealing for offside, Tranter drew the keeper Gareth Williams, but his shot went wide of the net.
Goytre sent on substitutes Adam Roberts and Mike Dewar and immediately reaped the rewards, when the tricky Mason beat his marker before firing a shot across the keeper into the bottom corner of the net.
Goytre's midfield of Kevin Wallace, Mathew Cameron, Mark Jones, and the returning Craig Jollife were beginning to dominate in midfield and it came as no surprise when Mason broke clear and set-up a chance for Adam Roberts, whose powerhouse of a shot gave the Monmouth keeper Lee Williams no chance.
Phil Tranter pulled a goal back for Monmouth in the dying minutes of the game, but it was too little to late to save them from defeat.
