Govilon - 8

Newport Corinthians - 1

GOVILON continued the blistering start they made to their debut season in Gwent County Division Two with a thundering 8-1 win over Newport Corinthians on Saturday.

On their first ever visit to Govilon, Newport had no answer to goal machine Dean Morgan who bagged five goals.

Morgan was in irrepressible form as he grabbed a first half hat-trick, but it was new signing Craig James making his home league debut who opened the scoring after 10 minutes - slotting home with the outside of his boot.

Govilon suffered a setback ten minutes later, after conceding a penalty for the Corries to draw level.

Morgan began his haul on the half hour mark, lobbing over the goal keeper from close range, after which Matthew Ham headed just over from James' well delivered cross.

Morgan was again on the score-line moments later drawing the goalkeeper on the edge of the box and sliding the ball past him into an unprotected net.

Govilon's other new striker Matthew Stephens replaced the unlucky James who hobbled off with a hamstring injury before Robert Frost, whose dead ball play was to trouble Corries all afternoon hit the bar with a thundering free kick.

Stephens was soon in the thick of the action, and when he tangled with Corries goalkeeper just inside the box he was able to set up Morgan for the easiest of tap-ins, who grabbed his hat-trick in 15 minutes.

Stephens was rewarded early in the second half when he latched onto a through-ball which evaded the Corries defender, and coolly fired over the advancing goalkeeper to give Govilon a 5-1 lead.

On the hour mark Richard McCarthy won an aerial battle on the halfway line and set Morgan clear to again beat an advancing goalkeeper to notch his fourth.

Craig Thomas grazed the side netting, and then Matthew Stephens got the second of his goals to make the score 7-1.

A loose Corries pass out of defence fell at the feet of Matthew Ham who set up Morgan for his fifth.

This Saturday top of the table Govilon will play Rogerstone with a 3.00pm kick-off.
