GOVILON FC got their 2011/12 campaign underway with a scorching win over Cwmbran Town.
For the first 35 minutes the game was end to end and very even, but with ten minutes to half-time, Govilon struck with a well taken goal by Craig Thomas after some fine work out wide by Matthew Heritage.
Into the second-half and Govilon began to get on top of what was proving to be a very entertaining game.
Dean Morgan added a second early in the second half then finished the game off with a curling shot from 20 yards out which left the goalkeeper stranded.
On Saturday, Govilon visited Fairfield for a match which remained honours even at half-time with neither side being able to break the dead lock.
Govilon exerted a lot of pressure in the second half and were rewarded when a Matthew Heritage cross was turned in by Dean Morgan.
After yet another attack the ball was deflected off a Fairfied player for a corner.
Robbie Frost's ball was sent into the box and a thumping header from Leon Gilchrist put Govilon two goals to the good.
A magnificent finger tip save by Sam Morris in the Govilon goal kept his team's lead intact, but Fairfield still managed to score a consolation goal as the game entered injury time.
Elsewhere in Gwent County Division One, the Blaenavon Blues began their campaign with a 2-0 away loss to Pentwynmawr Athletic, but bounced back at home to beat Abercarn United in a 4-3 thriller.
In DIvision Two, Mardy were held to a 2-2 draw at Rockfield Rovers and were beaten at home 3-4 by Sudbrook Cricket.
Meanwhile in Division Three, the Abergavenny Thursdays were beaten 1-2 by Caldicot Castle.
