IF you are thinking about a relaxing day out to celebrate your granddaughter’s A-Level successes, then jumping off a 70 metre high cliff and whizzing across a quarry at 40mph might not be the first thing that springs to mind.

But for Govilon grandmother, Dorothy Harris, the chance to take to the air and raise some funds for a much-loved charity helped her to throw caution, and everything else, to the wind.

Dorothy has been facing a battle with cancer and the funds she raised, in excess of £1,000, will be going to St David’s Hospice Care.

Dorothy’s granddaughter, Carrianne Ralph, will soon be off to North Wales to begin her university life and the trip to the National Diving and Activity Centre in Chepstow, home of The Wire, was a surprise for Dorothy who began the day believing all that was in store was a meal at a golf club.

‘I’m very proud to have done it at my age,’ said Dorothy who, at 72, is due to begin a new course of cancer treatment this month.

‘I’ve had a little window until now when my life was my own and I’d like to thank all the fabulous people who have helped me and my family - particularly pupils at Llangynidr School who raised a whopping £222 for my charity appeal’ she added.

Dorothy and Carrianne are already planning their next fundraiser, which is likely to involve handling birds of prey at Craig y Nos Castle.
