GAME, Set and Munch is the witty title of a tasty book which has been launched to raise funds for Abergavenny Tennis Club writes Lesley Flynn
Three women from the club, helped by a whole host of other members, plus family and friends, have collected 141 recipes covering three courses, plus sections on fish and seafood, cakes, biscuits and bread and chutneys. The result is an innovative recipe book which includes contributions from famous chef Rick Stein, and local chefs Stephen Terry, Matt Tebbutt and Franco Taruschio, to name but a few.
The book is now on sale at £5 and was officially launched at the club on Saturday. It also has the blessing of Abergavenny Food Festival and it will be on sale the weekend of the festival on the information desk and online.
One of the three women is Christine Scott and she explained, "The original idea was Wendy Bidwell's a couple of years ago when the club members were planning the upgrade of the courts and floodlighting which allows all year round tennis for junior and senior players.
"Wendy's idea was left for a while, then I raised the idea again and said it would be a good idea, so we put out an email to members asking for recipes to see if it would work and although there was not a huge response initially, eventually we collected more than 100 recipes from members, family and friends.
"We were extremely fortunate to have help from the father of one of our junior members. Clive Davies, who runs his own company Usk Optimum, said formatting was his job so he did the layout which saved us a huge amount of time. We were also lucky to have illustrations from Carol Ellin which add to the attractiveness of the layout.
"We have used some of the club's background and a couple of old photographs showing the old wooden clubhouse when well known players like Ethel Thomas and Pam Heath were involved. I found out a lot of information from the Chronicle archives.
"We were delighted with the response from local restaurants whose chefs gave us a recipe each and local businesses helped to fund the printing costs by taking out advertisements in the book."
Wendy said, "When we lived in South Africa a recipe book was the sort of thing they did to raise funds so I thought it would be a good idea and Christine took it on board."
The third member of the team is Patsy Cole. She said, "We got together in February and decided we'd give it a try. We have lots of social events and we all bring something to eat so this book includes many of the recipes we use. I typed out most of the recipes and there are several from my husband and one from our daughter, plus a few friends.
"It has been a lot of work, far more than we thought it would be, but we're indebted to Clive Davies for his work. We'd still be doing the layout until Christmas without him."
