A SPECIAL crackdown operation on boy racers in Abergavenny is being planned by police in the near future.
Officers, who in the last two months alone have issued nearly 60 dispersal notices locally to move on likely offenders, are back on the tail of the anti-social young motorists.
They will be swooping at identified troublespots - the Fairfield and coach station car parks - to remove late-night troublemakers and check the legality of their noisy, suped-up cars.
Abergavenny’s police chief Huw Jones told councillors at their monthly meeting, “The message from us to these guys is that enough is enough.
“This has been going on for 20 years - and it has to stop. We are doing everything we can to deal with the problem.”
Among those taking part in the blitz will be a specially trained ‘vehicle prohibitor’ officer who will check the noise levels of suspect high-performance vehicles.
Any vehicle found wanting will be issued with special prohibition notice which could be implemented immediately or with a specified deadline to fix the fault.
Insp Jones said one of the big issues surrounding the racers was the noise coming from their revved-up cars late at night. Numerous complaints had been received from sleepless residents near the scene of the racers’ antics.
Insp Jones said often the baffles from exhausts would be removed by the transgressors to increase their vehicles’ noise levels.
He revealed that the rush of recently issued dispersal notices had been having the desired effect by keeping problems at the car parks down to a minimum.
“The policy is working because there are fewer incidents as a result - but they then start to creep up. It’s only a short-term solution,” he told councillors.
Councillor John Prosser heaped praise on Insp Jones and his team for their active stance on the long-running problem.
“They are doing a lot of work,” he told fellow members at the Town Hall gathering last Wednesday night.
