EXPLORE Castle Meadows with experts in the latest series of spring and summer walks launched this month by the Friends’ group.
The new season starts on Saturday, April 14 with a geology walk. Meet Alan Underwood in Byefield Lane Car Park at 10am.
On Saturday, April 21, discover the myths about plants and how they were used in the past. Meet Fiona Ford at 10am, Byefield Lane Car Park.
Learn about birds on Saturday, April 28, with a chance to see summer migrants, including sand martins. Bring binoculars if you can. Meet Steve Butler at 9am in Byefield Lane Car Park.
Take an evening walk on Thursday, May 3, around the meadows with bat detectors. Bring a torch. Meet Mark Langley, 8.30pm, Byefield Lane Car Park.
Go pond dipping on Sunday, May 20. Meet Becky Ward (Gwent Wildlife Trust), at 10am, outside the community orchard in Mill Street. Children must have wellies.
On Saturday, June 16: What’s that plant? Meet Sheelagh Kerry, 10am, Byefield Lane Car Park.
Go bug hunting on Saturday, June 30. Meet Steve Butler, 2.30pm, Byefield Lane Car Park.
Find out about butterflies on Saturday, July 14 with Jeff Davies. Meet at 11am, in Byefield Lane Car Park.
All walks are free and there’s no need to book. Stout footwear must be worn. Walks are suitable for the disabled, though some areas may be muddy. Scooters are available from Abergavenny Shopmobility if booked in advance (0800 298 3656). All walks are between two and three hours long. Dogs on leash only.
