Abergavenny is to host the Reaffirmation of the Freedom of Monmouthshire Parade alongside 70 Royal Welsh soldiers, this Saturday.
The Freedom of Monmouthshire was bestowed on the Regiment in 2011 in Monmouth in recognition of its long association with Monmouthshire and valiant service in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
The 1st Bn The Royal Welsh will reaffirm the Freedom of Monmouthshire in Abergavenny on Saturday. Soliders from the Royal Welsh, preceded by their band and Shenkin the Regimental goat mascot will march to St. John’s Square for the Reaffirmation Ceremony which will take place at 11.15am. Armed forces and civic dignitaries and town and county councillors will be in attendance.
The parade, which will include representatives of the Old Comrades, Army Cadets and the Royal British Legion, will then continue through the centre of town. Prior to disbanding a Salute will be taken en route outside Burtons by Brig RHT Aitken CBE (Lord Lieutenant of Gwent) and Brig PML Napier OBE along with the Mayor of Abergavenny.
Some unavoidable disruption to traffic, parking, loading and unloading will occur between 9am and 12.30pm in Cross Street. Parking will be prohibited whilst the Urban Clearway signs are in place and there will be marshals directing traffic
For a brief period, High Street, Castle Street, Tudor Street, Baker Street, Frogmore Street, Lion Street, Market Street, adjoining side streets and vehicle access to car parks will also be affected. Every effort is being made to keep inconvenience to a minimum.
