Former Eggheads star CJ de Mooi has been arrested on suspicion of an alleged killing in Amsterdam in the 1980s.

The 46-year-old, who lives in Monmouthshire and whose real name is Joseph Connagh, was apprehended at Heathrow Airport on Wednesday on a European arrest warrant issued in the Netherlands and appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court today.

The court was told the warrant related to allegations of manslaughter, murder, assault and battery in the Dutch city in 1988.

The Dutch authorities issued the warrant in May and are requesting the opportunity for ‘further questioning’.

In court, Mr de Mooi confirmed his name, age and address. He was granted bail and ordered to attend a further hearing in November.

He had revealed in his autobiography that he may have killed a man while he lived on the streets in the Netherlands two decades ago. He said he punched a man who approached him with a knife and then threw him into a canal.

Mr de Mooi is a former model and also a former president of the English Chess Federation. He became a panellist on the popular BBC-2 show, which features five quiz champions competing as a team against different challengers, in 2003 after winning a series of game shows.

With production firm 12 Yard intent on ‘refreshing’ the Eggheads line-up by introducing two new panel members, he had said he would be leaving his role to take up an acting career in South Africa.

He adopted the name de Mooi when modelling, which he translates as Dutch for ‘handsome’.
