FORMER town and county councillor Douglas Edwards has become Abergavenny’s newest Honorary Burgess.

Mr Edwards was first elected to the town council in 1991 and Monmouthshire County Council in 2004. He served as Mayor in 1992/3 and again in 2009/010. He is best known for his work in the Cantref Ward and, from 2004, in Grofield Ward.

He worked tirelessly along with his wife Edna to re-establish the Abergavenny Eisteddfod and was once of the driving forces behind bringing the National Eisteddfod to Abergavenny last summer for the first time in over a century

As a county councillor he played an important part with Marion Pearse in starting the Park Street Community Centre and as the ward member influenced the public realm works and the new surfaces in the High Street, St John’s Square and Nevill Street. He strongly supported the proposal to create the town hall as the hub for the area.

Mr Edwards retired as a councillor in this year’s May elections.
