LLANGORSE Sailing Club's Flying Fifteen Open meeting held last weekend was a resounding success.
The event attracted crews from Cardiff Bay, Chew Valley and as far away as Middle Nene, Datchet and Broxbourne.
24 of the 20 foot keel boats competed in three classes according to the age of the boats. There were ten boats competing in the Open Class, nine in the Classic races and four in the Silver Fleet.
The weather on Saturday for the three race schedule was ideal - good winds, even though their direction was a bit unpredictable at times, and blue skies giving some spectacular views of the boats racing with multi coloured spinnakers set against the back-drop of the Beacons, while the two races on Sunday had to be delayed until a rather fitful breeze filled in.
The racing in the open fleet was a tussle between Ruairidh (Rory) Scott, crewed by Hugh Fletcher and the LSC crew of David Morgan and Lorina Walden. By the end of racing on Saturday Rory and his crew had won two races to David Morgan's one, Sunday saw Rory and Hugh make a clean sweep by winning both races and thus winning the Open Class series with four wins, to David Morgan's one first and three seconds. The Llangorse crew of Nick and Claire Taylor from Llanfoist, who finished second in the last race, were the only other crew to break into the top two slots during the whole of the five race Open Class series.
The Silver fleet series was won by Peter card of Llangorse Club crewed by his brother. He collected three wins and a third, finishing one point in front of Mike Firth and Mervyn Wright from the Datchet club, who had two firsts, a second and a third. The Classic Fleet series, like the Open class, was dominated by two crews. The overall winner in the class was Tim Tomlinson, crewed by Jim Reid, from Middle Nene who won all five races, beating the Llangorse pair of John Craddock and Kendal Paul who had finished the series with four second places.
The first race in each class on Sunday morning was for one of the Simon Dangerfield Memorial Trophies. Simon was a keen member of Llangorse Sailing Club who had won many events sailing in Classic Flying Fifteens, including two World Classic Championships. The trophies were presented to the trophy race winners, Rory Scott, Tim Tomlinson and Peter Card by Simon's widow Kathryn.
Before the trophies and prizes were awarded, the club was thanked and congratulated by Sue Bannister, the UK Flying Fifteen Class Association President for having put on such an excellent well organised and run event in such beautiful surroundings.
