An elderly man who fell over and injured himself in freezing conditions, was rescued with the help of some young first-aiders.

The man fell and lay injured on Hereford Road on Monday evening, while passers-by looked after him until an ambulance arrived.

Their plea for help, posted on social media, was picked up by a group of young people who rushed to the scene to help look after the injured man until his family arrived and took him to Nevill Hall where he received treatment.

Abergavenny Round Table hailed the effort of the group, posting on their website, “We’re really pleased we teamed up with Blaise First Aid Training last year and trained almost 3,000 children in first aid completely free of charge.

“Today an elderly gentleman in our community needed help and some of the children that Keri Eynon of Blaise First Aid trained were able to help him and knew what to do. We’re really proud of them! Well done guys!”

The family of the 85 year old man, who suffers from Alzheimer’s has praised everyone - especially the Year 7 pupils from King Henry School - involved in looking after him until they could arrive to take him to hospital.

“We would like to thank all the people who helped our father especially the King Henry School year 7 students who phoned an ambulance and waited with him till help arrived from various people who covered him with blankets and comforted him.

“He is 85 yrs old and suffers with Alzheimer’s. He had been waiting for an ambulance for over an hour so we eventually took him to hospital by car and after test and check ups he came home the same night a bit shaken up

but none the worse for his ordeal.

“We would like to take this opportunity once again to thank each and everyone of the people who came to his aide,” said Michelle Telfer
