A Gofundme page has been set up for a female roadworker involved in an incident on the B4521 near Skenfrith.

23-year-old Sophie Bowles from Powys was working on machinery in the road between The Priory and the border prior to resurfacing works when she was run over, crushed into a chipper and dragged for five metres.

Her father, Matthew, is trying to raise money to convert their garage into a living space for his daughter.

Sophie had been working in her dream job as a highway maintenance operative driving HGVs for the last four years.

“Unfortunately on July 13 as she was working on the roads, she was run over, crushed into a chipper and dragged along the road. The accident has caused life changing injuries, her pelvis was broken into nine pieces, her hip cup joints were both broken, her hip ball joint was smashed and her femur broken,” he said on the Gofundme page set up with a target of £13k.

Sophie has undergone three major surgeries and will require years of rehabilitation.

“We need to convert our garage so she can have a wet room and living space all in one to ensure she retains as much independence as possible. Sophie is an extremely hard working woman and has helped so many people in her life. Any help is much appreciated.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision on B4521 towards Abergavenny at around 5.25pm on Monday, July 13.

“Officers attended alongside paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service. The collision involved a pedestrian and a car; she remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. This incident has been reported to the Health and Safety Executive for review.”

No arrests have been made.
