Builders forced to close a busy Abergavenny road for repairs are trying to get the work done within 24 hours, it has emerged.

Local firm Alun Griffiths planted four labourers to patch up a 2.5 sqm section of road outside Abergavenny’s Town Hall after cracks appeared just six weeks after a resurface.

Workers have taped off the road leading toward the bend outside to carry out the emergency repairs. One labourer said a small section needs resurfacing, and that the crew hopes to be out of the way within 24 hours.

Alun Griffiths Contractors is reported to be paying for the repairs.

A spokesperson for Monmouthshire County Council, said the work was essential to prevent a likely pothole in future.

“The material laid outside Abergavenny Town Hall in late February did not bind satisfactorily with the base so consequently we are rectifying the problem.  Work should take no more than 24 hours.  Failure to act would likely cause a large pothole in the road.”
