Acting on intelligence, teams of Home Office immigration enforcement officers simultaneously raided the Red Indigo restaurants on Brecon Road, Crickhowell and Castle Street, Hay-on-Wye on Friday evening (July 25). Staff at both restaurants were questioned to check if they had the right to be in the UK. At Crickhowell, eight men from Bangladesh were caught working illegally. All eight were arrested and have since been granted temporary release while steps are taken to remove them from the UK. They will have to report regularly to the Home Office during this time. At Hay-on-Wye, eight men, seven from Bangladesh and one from Myanmar, were also caught working illegally. One was found to have an outstanding application to the Home Office under consideration and was not arrested. The remaining seven were all arrested and have since been granted temporary release on similar terms to those in Crickhowell. Both premises, which are in the same ownership, will be served with a notice warning that a financial penalty of up to £20,000 per illegal worker will be imposed unless the employer can demonstrate that appropriate pre-employment checks were carried out, such as seeing a passport or Home Office document. Jonathan Whineray, from the Wales Home Office Immigration Enforcement team, said, "Employers in Wales who use illegal labour are encouraging illegal immigration and undercutting businesses that play by the rules. "We are happy to work with businesses to let them know what checks need to be made, but those who choose not to carry out these checks can expect enforcement visits and financial penalties." Information to help employers carry out checks to prevent illegal working can be found at gov.uk/government/collections/employers-illegal-working-penalties . It includes a new quick answer right-to-work tool to help employers check if someone has the right to work in the UK.
