ABERGAVENNY’S King Henry VIII School has been praised by a team of Estyn inspectors for the ‘strong improvements’ which have been made at the school since its last inspection in December 2104.

The school was revisited in June over a three day period. There was particular praise for the work done to improve attendance, literacy and numeracy and to ensure that learning is of high quality across all subjects.

The Estyn inspectors were also impressed by the effective leadership shown by the headteacher Mrs Elspeth Lewis and all leaders in driving up standards and improving attendance.

As a result King Henry VIII School is deemed to be making greater improvements than other schools in terms of standards at key stage 3 and key stage 4.

The pupils who were interviewed commented very favourably on their education at the school and the opportunities that they are given to do their best by their teachers.

In addition, the inspectors were very impressed by the positive attitudes, enthusiasm and behaviour of pupils in lessons and their willingness to work both collaboratively and independently. It was also noted that behaviour at break and lunchtime was very good.

Rod Cunningham, chairman of governors at the school said, ‘This very pleasing report is a culmination of the hard work of the teachers, pupils and governing body. The school has now laid solid foundations for further improvement.’

Mrs Lewis, headteacher, added, ‘We are delighted that Estyn have recognised the progress made in terms of standards and attendance. However we will continue to address these issues to further raise standards and increase opportunities for all pupils, regardless of background or ability’.
