GOING up to ‘Big’ school is momentous and exciting for many pupils, but for some children it can be a worrying time.
To make the transition smoother, King Henry VIII Comprehensive and its cluster primary schools engaged Upbeat Music and Arts Service to work with new pupils on a project culminating in a massive concert to mark their final summer term in primary school.
The project of Summer 2018 featured 230 children performing for over 450 family members in disciplines such as Samba, tuned percussion and Japanese Taiko drumming.
Upbeat Music and Arts works with schools and organisations across Wales to deliver projects and learning experiences that raise skills, self–esteem, confidence and aspirations.
‘Sharing successful, non threatening, uplifting experiences can be a catalyst for changing perceptions and unearthing talents,’ said David Powell, Upbeat Music and Arts founder and alumni of KHS.
‘The transition from primary school to secondary is an important point in any student’s life,’ said Mark Stockham, deputy head at KHS, ‘It’s no exaggeration to say those first few months can set the seal on their future education, so it’s vital they start with an enjoyable experience making them want to come to school and be a part of it. It is also involving parents in the whole experience.’
