A DATE has been set for governors of Brynmawr Foundation School to challenge the Welsh Assembly Government's handling of the proposed sixth form closure.

A judicial review will be heard by a High Court judge at Cardiff Civil Justice Centre on January 19, 20, and 21.

Governors sought a judicial review to challenge whether the Welsh Assembly can legally delegate the power to Blaenau Gwent Council to remove the sixth provision from the school due to its foundation status which means it is run by its own governing body but funded by the state.

A parent action group have passionately campaigned to save the school's sixth form from closure by handing in a petition of over 2000 names to the Welsh Assembly last month.

Parents and pupils from the school held banners outside The Senedd in Cardiff Bay calling for a 'choice' with regards where children are educated.

In September, Blaenau Gwent council's executive voted to propose closing all its sixth forms and transfer pupils to a £111 million education facility run by Coleg Gwent at The Works in Ebbw Vale.
