Police are investigating a serious road traffic collision between two cyclists and a van that occurred on Tuesday night on the old A40 Raglan to Abergavenny Road between the Steelhorse Cafe and the Hardwick Roundabout at 8.50pm.

The collision occurred as the cyclists were riding toward the Abergavenny area and the van was travelling in the opposite direction.

A 26-year-old male cyclist from Cardiff was injured and is currently in a critical condition at Nevill Hall Hospital.

A 33-year-old male cyclist from Abertillery also receive treatment for minor injuries.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision and is appealing for anyone with information to come forward and contact them on 101 and quote log number 576 9/7/13.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We sent a rapid response vehicle and an emergency ambulance to the scene. A male patient with a serious head injury was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny."

A spokesman for Abergavenny Festival of Clycling told the Chronicle that the organisers were extremely upset about the accident.

"The event was staged by local clubs as part of the festival fringe and promoted through our programme, but we are devastated to hear the news and our thoughts are with those involved and their families," he said.
