Groups such as Extinction Rebellion and the schools protests started by Greta Thunberg have been much in the news in recent months.
Now, a local Monmouthshire collection of concerned citizens has revealed its involvement in ’The Time is Now’, which took place earlier this year in London and involved a lobby of MPs.
It was organised by the Climate Coalition and Greener UK and was supported by concerned individuals representing well over 100 organisations, including environmental and wildlife groups, faith-based development charities, and community groups such as the W.I. Participants were campaigning for the ’net-zero’ carbon target date to be brought forward to 2045 at the latest, and an Environment Bill with legally binding targets, alognside government commitment to put environmental and climate concerns at the heart of the UK’s international agenda. An estimated 12,000 people of all ages took part on the day in an atmosphere of harmony and good humour, said a spokeswoman. Following a march from Trafalgar Square to Westminster, some attended an event where they were addressed by leaders of different world faiths. Campaigners then made their way to designated areas on either side of the Thames where they could present their concerns to their own MPs. Last week, some met David Davies MP to present their concerns.
