A good Samaritan who chased after a visitor to Abergavenny and handed back his wallet containing hundreds of pounds has been found.

John Griffiths, 72, replied to an appeal in last week’s Chronicle to find the ‘mystery’ gentleman.

Whilst visiting Abergavenny two weeks ago, Adrian Jones, 84, dropped his wallet in the town centre. Not realising his mistake, he and seven-year-old great grandson Oliver made their way home.

Mr Jones said a man ‘in his forties’ had caught up and got his wallet back to him. Shocked at the level of kindness, he said, he’d forgotten to thank the man properly.

Following last week’s story, he came forward as the good samaritan.

After noticing the wallet, Mr Griffiths - who was visiting Abergavenny from Blaenavon - chased after the pair and handed over the item, along with the £300 inside.

“I noticed the wallet on the floor right outside the chip shop, so I gave chase and caught up with them.

“I am quite surprised he described me as in my forties. I am a few years older than that! But, I do look a little bit younger, I suppose.

“It’s a horrible feeling to lose something like that, so I am glad I could help them out,” said Mr Griffiths.

At the time, Mr Jones said he was especially happy as the good deed was witnessed by his great grandson.

“Perhaps Oliver will learn something from that - that if he ever found something on the street, the best thing to do would be to hand it in to the owner,” he said.
